Larry graduated from Cuba Central School in 1949 and enlisted in the US Air Force in November 1950. He served as a flight engineer and was discharged in November 1954 after having served overseas in Europe and Africa.
He was employed as a draftsman at Acme Electric from 1955 to 1965; was the owner of Congdon's Marine Sales & Service on Cuba Lake from 1964 to 1970; a salesman at Mastel Ford, Olean from 1970 to 1971; a body repair man at Felix Motors, Belmont from 1971 to 1973 and Congdon Body Shop, Cuba from 1973 to 1977; plus he owned and operated Congdon Appraisals as an insurance appraiser from 1977 until his retirement in 1990.
In retirement he enjoyed watching the ducks and sailboats from his deck on Cuba Lake and was also a skilled sculptor of clay miniatures.
Larry was a member of Our Lady of Angels Church in Cuba and a former member of the American Legion, Post 655.
Surviving are four daughters, Valerie (Peter) Collins of Olean, Renee (Joe McGrath) Congdon of Cuba, Stephanie (Craig) Ingalls of Hartwell, Ga and Daphne (Joe Castillo) Congdon of Covina, Ca; one son Matthew (Carrie) Congdon of Harwell, Ga; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren and one great grandchild. He is also survived by two brothers, Richard Congdon of Buffalo, Dean (Elaine) Congdon of Cuba; one sister, Catherine (Joseph) Yusko of Magnolia, NJ and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by four brothers, infant twins, who died in 1923, Mark Congdon, who died on 4 October 1936, Clair Congdon, who died on 1 May 1954; two sisters, Mary Crowley, who died on 13 November 1997 and Harriet Dye who died on 28 July 2010; and his long-time companion Helen Brundage who died on 12 October 2009.
Friends will be received by the family at the Mark F. Rinker Funeral Home & Memorial Service Inc., 9 Bull Street, Cuba, NY on Wednesday 29 December 2010 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm where funeral services will be held on Thursday 30 December 2010 at 11:00am. Deacon Frank Pasquale will officiate.
Burial will be in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery, Cuba on Friday 31 December 2010.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Larry's name to Disabled American Veterans or a Catholic charity of your choice.
