Born on February 2, 1939, in Buffalo, she was a daughter of Clayton E. and Marion (Schmidt) Salzman. In 1956, she married Kenneth Schurr who predeceased her in 2004.

While Joan was young and still in school, she worked at the lunch counter at the Statler Hotel in Buffalo and Dog and Suds Restaurant in Clarence. When she moved to the southern tier she worked several years at ACME Electric, Current Controls in Wellsville for 13 years, and retired from Cuba Memorial Hospital where she was a nurse’s aide.

She loved to be outside whether it was working in her yard or hiking her property. She also enjoyed cooking, crocheting, and knitting, but most of all enjoyed all the time she spent with her family and her grandchildren with some of her best memories were the campouts she hosted.

She is survived by; a son Walter (Patricia) Schurr of Friendship; three daughters Barbara (Greg) Hovey of Amity Lake, Joan Vandewalke and Kay Jameson, both of Houston, Texas; 15 grandchildren and several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; a brother Clayton (Pat) Salzman, Jr. of Alden; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two sons Edward and Kenneth (Darlene) Schurr, two brothers Paul and Howard Salzman, and a sister Eileen Curto.

The family will receive friends at the Mark F. Rinker Funeral Home & Memorial Service, Inc., 9 Bull Street, Cuba, on Wednesday, December 17, 2025 from 11:00 A.M. until Noon at which time Funeral Services will begin in the funeral home. Pastor John Francisco, will officiate.
