James E. Boyd, 96, of 52 Spring Street, Cuba, passed away Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at Cuba Memorial Hospital's Palliative Care Unit after a brief illness.
Born on Feb. 19, 1915, in Bliss, New York, he was a son of John and Jenny Sullivan Boyd. On July 3, 1937, in Perry, New York he married the former Jane Lyon who predeceased him in 1977. On October 27, 1979, in Hicksville, NY he married the former Jean Monahan who survives.

Mr. Boyd was a graduate of Perry High School. After graduating he attended Ithaca College on a musicians scholarship, but later transferred to Geneseo Normal School and later graduated from Buffalo State College with his Bachelors degree in education. He later received his master of education degree from St. Bonaventure University.
Jim began working in the Cuba rural school system in 1937 and in 1938 when the rural schools closed and became centralized he went to work for the Cuba Elementary School where he taught history and English. In the mid 1950's he furthered became the Cuba Elementary School principal, retiring in 1977.
Mr. Boyd was a member of Our Lady of Angels Parish and the Retired Teachers of New York. He was a former member and past president of the former Cuba Lions Club, a former member and past president of the former Cuba Rotary Club where he was named a Paul Harris Fellow, a former member of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, and a former member of the Bolivar Country Club.
Jim enjoyed golfing, playing cards, and was an excellent bridge player. He was an accomplished trumpeter and pianist. He loved to read and garden. In his younger years he gave private trumpet lessons.
Surviving in addition to his wife Jean of Cuba are his children, Judith V. Boyd of Rochester, Janice E. (Timothy) Rinker of Cuba,
Jane M. (Stephen) Krahe of Flagstaff, Arizona, Barbara E. (Thomas) Sharp of West Henrietta, NY, Kathryn A. (Richard) Leahy of Mableton, Georgia,
Maureen Schultz of Ronkonkamo, NY, and Brian T. Monahan of East Hampton, NY; 16 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren;
and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his first wife and parents he was predeceased by a brother William Boyd and a sister Virginia Gridley.
Friends will be received at the Mark F. Rinker Funeral Home & Memorial Service, 9 Bull Street Cuba on Thursday, December 29, 2011 from 7-9 P.M. and on Friday, December 30, 2011 from 2-4 & 7-9 P.M. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, December 31, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. in Our Lady of Angels Church, 50 South Street, Cuba, New York 14727. Fr. Dennis Mancuso will be the celebrant.
Burial will be in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery, Cuba.
A Scriptural Wake Service will be held on Friday, December 30, 2011 at 8:45 P.M. in the Funeral Home.
Memorial's may be made to Our Lady of Angels Church.
